Condolences and Helpful Strategies following the Bondi Junction Incident on 14 April 2024

WAYS Youth & Family would like to extend our condolences to the victims and victims’ families following the recent tragedy which occurred at Bondi Junction. Our thoughts are with all of those who have been affected including those who witnessed the event, and anyone who may be feeling impacted by hearing the news.

The WAYS Wellness Centre have come up with some strategies below to help you take care of yourself during this difficult time:

Practice good self-care

Self-care often involves activities which are either enjoyable, calming, or nourishing. Some examples might include a walk down to the beach, watching a favourite tv show, having a warm bath, or doing some exercise

Stick to helpful routines

Helpful routines can help us through challenging times by giving us a sense of predictability and doing things which we know are good for our health and wellbeing. For instance, taking care of our sleep by not staying up too late, eating regular meals, making your bed, or getting dressed for the day

Remain connected with others

During difficult times we can sometimes withdraw and isolate ourselves from others. Although it is okay to give yourself some space and take time away from others, it can also be important to remain connected with people you trust and know that they care about you. This could include a friend or family member you check in with briefly to let them know how you are doing, or sharing what your plans are for the day

Give space for difficult thoughts and feelings

There is no right or wrong way to feel after an event such as the one we faced over the weekend; whether you were directly exposed to the recent incident, know of someone who had been affected, or simply notice you are struggling after hearing the news. It can be helpful acknowledging difficult thoughts and feelings as they come and go. Try to notice the sensations within your body, do you notice tightness? Has your breathing changed? What emotions come up for you? Whatever arises, remind yourself that is okay to feel this way

Find an anchor

Although it is important to give space to challenging thoughts and feelings, if we find ourselves getting caught up or stuck with particular thoughts, ideas, and feelings, it can be useful to find an anchor to help ground us and bring us back to the present moment. You can find an anchor by directing your attention to your present experience, for example, noticing your breathing, noticing your surroundings, including sights and sounds.

Reach out for support when needed

Finally, if you find that you are struggling, or you are becoming overwhelmed by difficult thoughts and feelings, please reach out for support. You might have a chat with a trusted friend or family member, or you might like to chat to a professional support either by talking to your GP, a counsellor or psychologist.

We would like to remind everyone that our Wellness Centre Services offers free and confidential counselling and support to young people aged 12-24 and their families, including those affected by recent events. If you need support, please call 02 9365 2500 or email [email protected]
